Girona shock Spain
The story behind Girona climbing their way to the top of the table.
In a league that is looked at as a two horse race between Barcelona and Real Madrid, with Atletico Madrid sometimes making a third party appearance on the title charge, there is anow a new team in town to add further excitement for the Spanish football fans. This because at this moment in time there in an unfamiliar team sitting top of La Liga in Girona. A team whose previous best ever finish in the league was 10th, along with a stadium which has capacity less than 15,000 people and a spend of £4 million in the past summer transfer window. However this has not stopped them this season as they seem to be displaying liquid football with such a free flowing attack.
Girona were promoted to La Liga for the first time in the 2017/18 season and managed to survive for another season before being relegated again. But some success seen them promoted back to the top flight of Spanish football for the 2022/23 season where they achieved their joint highest finish to date, which they seem to be building on in this current season with how well they have performed so far. As of only 1999 Girona were playing their football in the Catalan reginal national leagues.
Girona currently sit two points ahead of Real Madrid and four points ahead of Barcelona, some fans even think thy could have a champions league qualification spot nailed on as early as November because 10 points currently separate Girona and the team that sit in fifth, even though it is still only doors, with that attacking football Girona are currently playing doesn't look like it is about to slow down by any means.
The free flowing football as mentioned, seems to be the masterplan that has been created by the Manager Michael Sanchez Munoz who has been at the club since 2021. The manager has created a mentality that allows for such offensive football and the proof is in the pudding because as of this current international break his team are the top scores in La Liga.
With this new team that the manager has assembled, a close, tight nit relationship in the dressing room has been formed between the players, the manager and the fans that are boosting their team on to go and win, week n, week out like they have been doing this season. The question is now can they keep it up?
As football fans we know a story like this is far from impossible with the likes of what happened in the 2015/16 season involving Leister City in the Premier league. So are we looking at a moment where history is about to repeat itself, this time over in Spain? Well truthfully who knows but we will all keep our eyes peeled.
